Are you in need of a bedroom makeover but don’t have much room to work with? Not to worry, the experts here at Websters are here to help – you’re in the right place. We’ve come up with a few fantastic furnishing ideas that will completely transform the look of your bedroom whilst making it look big(ger than it actually is).

Luxurious and modern designs will tell you that you need a king-size bed, an office or a sitting area, but if you don’t have the luxury of space to work with, you won’t be able to take advantage of these ideas. After all, who really wants an office in their bedroom? It’s the ultimate place of rest, there is no place for working.

Here are a few brilliant furnishing ideas for a small bedroom to be big in style:

Keep colours light and bright

For a small bedroom, white should be a front runner for your base colour. Consider investing in white: paint/wallpaper, pillow & bed sheets and other furnishings such as mirrors and drawers. White stops the space from looking compact and boxed in, instead it combats the absence of large space by brightening it up.

To prevent your room from looking extremely basic and all-white, consider other textiles and white-on-white colours. A room that is full of white and nothing else has no personality, something you don’t want – it doesn’t feel comfortable or relaxing which is the complete opposite of a bedroom’s functionality.

Put your bed in the corner

Majority of bedroom’s have a similar layout – the bed is in the centre, with bed-side tables on either side. But if your bedroom is unfortunately small, you won’t be able to have the layout that is the norm, instead you should put your bed in the corner to create space. After all, no bed-side table or cupboard is big enough to fit in a tiny space down the side of your bed.

Placing your bed in the corner also makes it feel that little bit snugger and more comfortable – almost like a university dorm.

Embrace minimalism

Reduce the amount of clutter in your bedroom by embracing the minimalism and whittling it down to the essentials. The focus of the space is the bed, much like majority of bedrooms – you do this by keeping the number of accessories, pillows and furnishings down.

An even better way to give your room that minimalist, sleek look is by using contemporary built-ins such as built-in wardrobes. Not only do they maximise storage whilst looking like they’re not even there, but a good built-in around your bed creates a cosy sleeping nook.

When asked about living room furniture, the first thing that springs to mind is the sofa, but in a close second place is the coffee table, as for a lot of people, the coffee table is the focal point of their room. While coffee tables are quite ubiquitous, there is a wide range of options available to you. Now, to help you whittle your choices down and choose the perfect coffee table, here are a few questions to ask when choosing a coffee table.

Questions to ask when choosing a coffee table

Living room or family room coffee table?

There is a difference between a living room and a family room coffee table, and it’s simply that the family coffee table receives more rough use. A more traditional coffee table is there to look the part, and is usually in the form of glass.

Family room coffee tables need to be of a sturdier material, and we recommend you invest in one with storage options such as drawers.

Will it be your centrepiece?

If your coffee table is going to be the centrepiece of your room, this will affect your choice when choosing its:

– Material

– Style

– Size

– Surface finish and colour

Which material do you prefer?

The most obvious material to think of is wood, but you don’t have to restrict yourself to wood.

– Materials such as marble or darker wood options such as walnut look great in traditional rooms

– Leather looks great in a variety of rooms and are extremely good to maintain

It’s important to take a look at the room that you have and what will look good in that room. Glass and clear acrylic will make a room look bigger.

Shopping for a new sofa is confusing and draining to say the least, there are so many different options to choose from, and there are a lot of things you have to consider in terms of yours and your family’s needs so here are some benefits of having leather furniture.

Just a few of the options you have are: high or low back? Classic or modern design? Fixed cushions or loose cushions? Now, these are all extremely important questions, but the most frequently asked question in terms of sofa is whether to buy a leather sofa or not. We can’t make your mind up for you, but here are a few points that might help with your decision.

Benefits of having leather furniture

Hypoallergenic

People who suffer badly from allergies are usually better with leather sofas rather than fabric ones. This is because leather doesn’t harbour pet dander, dust mites or other allergens. Fabric on the other hand is a lot worse for it.

Appearance

A leather sofa can add much needed elegance to any room, much more than a fabric sofa could. Typically, leather sofas are a lot more fashionable and can affect the aesthetic of a room more than their fabric counterpart.

Particularly if you’re looking for a contemporary or modern look, the leather sofa is a lot more high-end and appears sleeker.

Maintenance

More benefits of having leather furniture is that leather is very, very easy to clean in comparison to fabric, it only requires a light dusting or rubdown a few times a year. Fabric needs to be regularly vacuumed and cleaned as well as being the more awkward material to clean if you have spilt something.

Also, leather can last for decades, maintaining its great look for years on end if you maintain it properly. Although it doesn’t need to be constantly cleaned, you need to be careful it doesn’t split or crack.

Websters Distinctive Furniture stocks and sells a wide range of high-quality leather furniture including sofas, chairs and bedroom furniture. If you would like more information about our range of products or the benefits of leather furniture, visit our showroom in Brighouse, get in touch or call us on 01484 712024.

Choosing a sofa

Buying a new sofa is one of the biggest investments you will make in terms of the interior of your home and your living space as a whole, so it’s important you end up choosing a sofa that’s right for your home. The general consensus is that a sofa will stay in good condition for around 7 years, but as most of us may have experienced, they can stay in your home for 15+ years

Try before you buy

Just like you would with a bed or a car, it’s important that you test out your sofa before forking out a big sum of money.

Check the cushions

What’s on the inside of the sofa is just as important as what’s on the outside. Feather-filled cushions are extremely comfortable but very often need plumping whilst fibre or foam cushions lose their shape over time. We recommend a combination of feather and foam as feathers provide comfort whilst foam provides structure.

Focus on fabric

Whether you go for a bold colour, a neutral colour or one that will match the rest of the room, the fabric should contribute massively to your room. It’s important to think of the functionality – do you have dogs, cats or children? Choose a material that cleans easily. Natural materials fade in sunlight, so if the sofa is near the window, go for a synthetic fabric.

Measure up

Dig out a tape measure from deep inside your drawers and measure the dimensions of the space that your sofa will be going. Also, be sure to check the dimensions of doorways, so that you are sure the door will fit through on delivery. If it doesn’t fit, you may have to opt for a sofa with removable legs or a lower back.

Websters is a family-run, independent business based in Yorkshire. We supply a wide range of sofas and encourage customers to visit our showroom to see the different designs, colours and materials available. For more information about choosing a sofa, or if you need specialist advice please do not hesitate to get in contact with us today on 01484 712024.

Best mattresses for bad backs and back pain

Online, you can find hundreds of articles and videos with countless diagrams and pictures trying to explain how your spine is adjusting when laying on different types of mattresses. So, to help you out and save you from hours of reading you probably won’t get back, we have compiled all the important information in to a few short points.

Around a third of your life is taken up by sleep, meaning you spend around a third of your life on a mattress. This makes it so important that you get the perfect one for you and your needs, especially if you’re experiencing back problems.

Mattresses should be supportive

There’s a myth that has been about for a while now which states that a hard or firm mattress is needed to support your back if you have pains – this is wrong. The British Chiropractic Association are among many professionals that say a supportive mattress is best.

The lighter you are, the softer the mattress.

A general rule – if you don’t weigh much, it’s recommended you have a soft mattress, and the heavier you are, the firmer the mattress should be.

Try before you buy

You wouldn’t buy a car just because you like the sound of it, without having a test drive or even just going down to the dealership to take a look – the same should apply to the mattress. You need to make sure the mattress is perfect for you and your needs, and the best way to do this is to go to a bed shop and try lot of different ones out.

At Websters Distinctive Furniture, our range of mattresses cover all of the above, so we are sure that you will find the best mattresses for bad backs and back pain. To find out more, pop into our Brighouse showroom in West Yorkshire to try them out yourselves, or get in touch with one of our specialists by calling 01484 712024 to discuss this further.

It’s December, and December means Christmas! Here are a handful of ideas for your festive décor in your home, without going completely over the top.

Here at Websters Distinctive Furniture, we are getting right into the festive spirit. The trees are up, the wreaths are on the doors and holly is on the walls – we are ready for Christmas and all it has to offer. But are you?

Make white your base colour

Now, we all know that white is one of the most dominating and significant colours when it comes to Christmas time due to certain aspects such as snow, Santa’s beard and the trimmings on his suit. This means that choosing white as your primary colour is extremely important, and the fact that the colour makes its Christmas counterpart (red) stand out even more is great.

White walls, fake snow flakes and white fur tree dressing are just a few ways to create a miniature winter wonderland.

Use presents as décor

What’s the fun in spending all the time and effort to wrap all your Christmas presents if you’re just going to store them in a cupboard until the big day? Decorate your home with presents – line the stairs with them using different wrapping paper to give your home a simple but effective elegant idea.

Go natural

Look no further than nature to take some decorative inspiration. Use fresh evergreen wreaths, boughs and garlands alongside in-season citruses such as limes, oranges and lemons and to give your home a natural, fresh look as well as making it smell heavenly.

If you’re looking for brand new furniture just in time for Christmas Day, look no further than here at Websters. We have been providing distinctive furniture to our customers since 1865, so if you’re interested in top-quality products provided by experienced professionals, please contact us or call us today on 01484 712024.

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of your home, and if it isn’t, it should be. Bad lighting can not only impact your eyesight, but it can negatively affect you when you’re doing work, cooking and taking out day-to-day tasks – bad lighting whilst doing all of these could also be very dangerous. You may not appreciate the lighting in your home, but when it is poor, you certainly can.

So, to reap the benefits of good lighting and to be sure the lighting in your home is perfect, here are a few helpful hints on how to choose the perfect lighting for your home

How to choose the perfect lighting for your home

Safety for your home

On the exterior walls of your home, along the walkways, be sure to light up the way for visitors at your home. Ambient lighting should be applied all around the exterior – too dim lighting is an invitation for intruders, whereas too bright lighting could potentially disturb the neighbours. For a helping hand, follow the security lighting and aesthetics of your neighbours.

Multiple light sources for one space

For rooms such as the kitchen and bedrooms, we suggest you have multiple sources of lighting as it will help you achieve multiple functions in just one space. In the kitchen, haver under counter and cupboard lighting and in bedrooms invest in lamps or bed-side lights.

Remember night lighting for kids

If you have children who are scared of the dark, it is extremely important to have night lighting as it will help them sleep. It will also help you parents navigate through the room in the dark to get to the kids.

Here at Websters Distinctive Furniture, we stock a wide range of different domestic lightings to suit any home and their decor, for more information either visit our showroom in Brighouse, contact us or call a member of the team now on 01484 712024.

Although we are only in the autumn months of 2018, here at Websters Distinctive Furniture, we believe this is the perfect time to prepare for the brand-new interior designs that 2019 is going to bring us. To help you get prepared with us, here are the top interior design trends to look out for in 2019:

Velvet

Velvet is ‘the’ material at the moment and with it being available in an array of different colours and applications, it’s easy to see why. The applications feature crushed velvet pillows and eye-catching upholstered walls – meaning there are very few places that this material won’t fit in inside your home.

Over the past six months, the number of searches for velvet online have increased by 400% and is now the most searched for material online.

Mid-century modern

A large number of interior designs have a sell-by date, but this isn’t the case for the mid-century modern trend – it never seems to grow old. There’s no denying, the mid-century modernism is everywhere with it being a major inspiration for hotels, restaurants, bars and so much more. Natural woods and 1950s chic fit perfectly together and never seems to go out of style, making it one of the interior design trends to look out for in 2019

Spiced honey

Dulux’s colour of the year has been named for 2019, and once again it is a warm, dark colour called spiced honey, although, some interior designers like to call it salted caramel. The warm caramel hue has sandy, woody and inviting tones and is certainly an upgrade you should consider making this winter.

We love to keep up with the latest trends and share the designs and ideas that we love – so if you’re looking to give your dining room a makeover for your guests, take note of these fantastic ideas for your dining room.

Add a bright colour pop

Brighten up a dining room which would be rather bland without your colourful injection. Pick one particular bold shade such as yellow, orange, red etc. and then decide how much you want of that colour. Some homeowners choose to subtly add it in the form of artwork or the odd piece of furniture.

Go green

A statement wall is always a great option for your living room, maximise its impact by choosing a deep green hue. Different shades such as emerald, forest green and moss work perfectly with metallic accessories and wooden furniture. Scatter potted plants and other elements of greenery to make an extra impact.

Mix it up

By choosing different coloured dining chairs, you are instantly giving your dining room that little bit more character.

Play with patterns

An easy way to give your dining room a makeover is not to splash the cash on new furniture, artwork or lighting, but to simply decorate a wall with new, patterned wallpaper. Floral designs look fresh and stylish, whilst once again working perfectly with a wooden chair and table set and velvet furniture.

No matter the size, shape or purpose of a room, a good rug can be just the thing to make it look and feel right. But finding your perfect rug can be difficult – they can be expensive, and it’s important to get the right fit. Here’s a helpful guide on how to choose the perfect rug for your home:

Size

It might sound obvious, but you need to find a rug that fits the room. Too big and it could dominate the space and disrupt your furniture arrangements, but too small and it risks going unnoticed. The key is to take into account your seating area, and have the rug occupy as much of that space as possible. Try to have all your furniture on the rug for an even feel – after all, you want your feet on the rug, not the floor.

The shape of the rug is also something to consider, and matching the shape of the room is a good way of working. A square rug looks nice in a square room, and a rectangular rug looks nice in a rectangular room.

Colour

Colour is probably the first thing people will notice about the room, so finding a rug that complements your colour scheme is key. There’s no hard and fast rule, but having your rug fit with your furniture is nice. For a new room, it might even be worth picking your rug first and finding furniture that complements it. It’s all down to personal choice – whether it’s bold, colourful or subtle, find a rug that suits the room.

Texture

Texture is important as it determines the look and feel of your rug. Again, look at the room and its furniture and try to find a texture that fits. Contrasts can be good, such as pairing sofas made of harder, smoother materials with a softer rug. It’s not all about looks, though.

Consider the practicalities, like cleaning the rug, and think about who’ll be using the room. Some rugs can present tripping hazards, especially for those with limited mobility or the elderly, so take this into account when picking your rug and choosing where to put it.
